Microplastics

EU introduces restrictions on microplastics

The European Commission has announced that Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, also known as the microplastics restriction, entered into force on 17 October 2023. This regulation restricts the use of synthetic polymer particles, including plastic glitter, to reduce harmful environmental effects.

The restriction applies to specific types of glitter and applications, including arts and crafts, toys and textiles. The ban concerns non biodegradable and insoluble glitter. Biodegradable or soluble glitter products placed on the market before 17 October 2023 fall outside the scope of these restrictions.

For the Toi-Toys assortment, this means that loose glitter and glitter slime will gradually be phased out. Glitter that is incorporated into a solid material, such as paint, glue and other solid objects, remains permitted, as does glitter permanently attached to the surface of toys.

The European Commission is currently preparing a comprehensive guidance document to provide stakeholders with further information on the application of the microplastics restriction. Until then, the current positions are outlined in the official guidance on plastic glitter and related products.

The introduction of the microplastics restriction will impact the Toi-Toys assortment. Over the coming period, we will adapt our product range to comply with the new legislation. Existing stock that is already available may continue to be sold without restrictions.
